asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his notice has been drawn to the proposal to construct a ship canal to link up the English and Bristol Channels; and whether he is prepared to make any pronouncement on the subject?

I have been asked to reply. I am informed that a scheme of the kind alluded to by my hon. Friend was mooted some time ago, but I have no knowledge of any practical steps having been taken to promote the same.
