Anti-Aircraft Defence, London

2.

asked the Secretary of State for War the official strength of a searchlight battalion in London?

The establishment published on page 69 of Army Estimates, 1938, was 1,336 all ranks, but units, where approved, are allowed to recruit above this figure.

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he has received any information from commanding officers that these large numbers make it impossible to administer these battalions efficiently?

3.

asked the Secretary of State for War what allowances are made for battery and company clerks in anti-aircraft defence in London?

It is the responsibility of Territorial Army Associations, to whom grants are made for this purpose, to provide clerical assistance for units.

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the amount sanctioned is only about 7s. 6d. per week, and that company commanders are now providing the extra amount out of their own pockets?

No, Sir. It is a little complicated to explain by question and answer, but I do not think that what my hon. and gallant Friend says covers the whole of the facts.

Czechoslovakia (German Propaganda)

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to the continuance of propaganda by radio from German stations designed to create division between Slovaks and Czechs which is intended to destroy entirely the prospects of setting up a Czecho-Slovak State when the transfer of territories to Germany has been accomplished; and whether in view of the Anglo-French guarantee under the Munich Agreement he will make representations to the German Government to stop this propaganda?

My attention has been drawn to certain reports which have appeared in the Press to this effect and my Noble Friend is causing official inquiries to be made about them.

In the event of this report being well-founded, will His Majesty's Government take the initial steps to ask the German Reich to discontinue this practice?

His Majesty's Ambassador in Berlin has already represented to the German Government the desirability of restraint in the German Press and German wireless. I think that we had better await this official report before we consider whether further representations are required.

Will the Prime Minister inform the House before the Debate closes what reply has been received to those representations?
