asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that there is disquiet at the waste of petrol by taximeter-cabs on unnecessary journeys; and whether he will issue instructions to guide local authorities as to action on the question?

I am aware of, and I appreciate, the expression of some public disapproval of the hiring of taxis for certain journeys. My hon. Friend will be aware, however, of the existing legal provisions (embodied in the Control of Motor Fuel Order, 1942) for the control of journeys by taxi. Beyond these measures it is difficult to go in the way of enforceable restriction. I could not usefully issue instructions to the local authorities, who have no powers in this matter.
