asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how the estimated amount of £68,000,000 for expenditure on research during the year 1947–48 is divided amongst the various branches of research such as medical, agricultural, industrial and defence.

The division is as follows:

Medical Research.698,000
Agriculture and Fisheries2,070,000
Industrial Research14,780,000
Defence Research49,731,000
The figure for Defence Research includes an element, which cannot be precisely identified, for research in connection with Civil Aviation undertaken by the Ministry of Supply.
