73.

asked the Minister of Food if he can make any statement on the proposed increased prices of chocolate and chocolate confectionery; and if he is satisfied that increases are essential and that supplies are not being kept back pending the proposed increase.

The maximum prices of chocolate and chocolate confectionery will be increased on or after 25th March as stocks at the new prices reach the shops. In general the increase will be 4d. a lb. but certain lines will be raised by 2d. and others by 6d. a lb. I am satisfied that these increases are necessary because of the rise in the world price of cocoa beans. I have no evidence that supplies are being kept back, but if my hon. Friend has any particular difficulty in mind I shall be glad to look into it.
