asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will introduce legislation to clarify the position as to whether original sentences involving the suspension of driving licences, originally passed by assize or equivalent courts, can be varied and the suspension period reduced on application to a magistrates' court.

A magistrates' court has no power to vary an order for disqualification from driving imposed on conviction at assizes or equivalent courts. If my hon. Friend will let me know of any particular difficulty that he has in mind I shall be glad to consider it.
