asked the Minister of Transport if he will close the motorways when fog reaches a certain density.
Mr. Tom Fraser
No. Such closures during fog would only transfer traffic from the motorways to the adjoining all-purpose roads. I do not consider that this would make for greater safety.

Mr. Carlisle
asked the Minister of Transport what precautions were being taken to warn motorists of the existence of fog on the M.6 motorway in the vicinity of Thelwall viaduct on the night of 5th-6th November, 1965.

The police put fog warning signs on roads leading to the motorway, on the slip roads and on the motorway itself to enable motorists to keep off the motorway or leave it to avoid the fog.
