asked the Secretary of State for Defence, if it is still his policy to bring the strength of the British Army of the Rhine up to 55,000; what progress has been made in this direction; and by when he expects to be able to fulfil this commitment.

Yes. The current strength is about 52,000 but the date by which we shall reach the full commitment must depend on our other overseas commitments and the rate of recruitment for the Regular Army.
