asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he takes to ensure that the pumping of effluent into the sea is not harmful to the inshore fisheries operating from The Hartlepools; and if he will give an assurance that all future industrial effluent will be treated to remove any toxic content, in order to safeguard the fishing industry there.

My right hon. Friend has no direct powers in this matter. However, the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee has a byelaw, approved by my Department, forbidding the deposit in coastal waters of substances injurious to fish.
