asked the Minister of Transport if he will give a general direction, in the public interest, to the British Railways Board to increase the maximum speed of British trains to 140 miles per hour; and if he will make a statement.

Such a direction would hardly be appropriate. The Railways Board are conducting some research directly bearing upon the possibilities of very high-speed trains, and these possibilities will be taken into account in the Board's planning for the future.
