asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will take steps, by legislation or otherwise, to assist the provision of swimming baths and tuition in the science and art of swimming during the present summer for people living in the poorer districts of Great Britain's cities, towns and villages.

All concerned in government, in local authorities and in the voluntary bodies are well aware of the need to improve facilities and tuition for swimming, but, of course, there must be some limitation on capital and other expenditure at present. The powers of local authorities are already adequate.
