Flight Data Recorders

asked the President of the Board of Trade what proposals he has to require aircraft crash recorders to be designed for higher standards of recoverability.

Consideration is being given to a requirement for flight data recorders fitted in future aircraft to have under-water separation, flotation and location devices. In addition, while the standard of protection of the recorded message is already of a high order, the Air Registration Board is reviewing with manufacturers the possibility of increasing this protection.

Light Aircraft And Helicopters (Noise)

asked the President of the Board of Trade what proposals he has to introduce noise limits for light aircraft and helicopters.

The initial noise certification plan excludes both helicopters and aircraft less than 12,500 lb. maximum take-off weight. Each category presents special problems of noise reduction and, pending further study, we do not think it expedient to defer the substantial benefits which the initial plan is intended to secure.

I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for his interest in this matter and will certainly consider his suggestion.
