Mr. Armstrong
asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men in the Northern Region, registered as unemployed at the latest count were 55 years of age or over; how many of those had been unemployed for six months or more; and what percentage they represent of the total number of men unemployed in the region.
Mr. Dudley Smith
At 13th July, 1970, the latest date for which an age analysis is available, 16,275 men aged 55 or over were registered as wholly unemployed in the Northern region. Of these, 11,959 had been on the registers for more than 26 weeks and they formed 25ยท3 per cent. of a total of 47,189 men registered as wholly unemployed in the region at that date.
