asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proposals he has to deal with the employment prospects of men over 40 years of age who have been unemployed for long periods due to their age or lack of job opportunities arising from the decline of basic traditional industries or a maldistribution of new industries.

The new training grants scheme announced by my right hon. Friend in his reply to my hon. Friend the Member for the High Peak (Mr. Le Marchant) on 4th November is designed to improve the prospects of the older unemployed. They will also be helped by the Government's proposals to promote more effective growth in the development areas.
