asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what progress has been made in the drafting of regulations on the leaking of substances from packaging materials into food; and if he will make a statement.

The Food Additives and Contaminants Committee stated in its Report on the Leaching of Substances from Packaging Materials that more infor- mation is necessary before the need for a control system can be decided. We are collecting information from interested organisations and will take account of work in progress under the Council of Europe. Meanwhile, consumers are protected by the general provisions of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955 and by regulations under that Act dealing with food hygiene, additives and contaminants.
