asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will extend by one month at each end of the season the period of maximum tariff protection of glasshouse crops such as lettuce and tomatoes.

If an application were made by the industry I should consider it on its merits in the normal way against all the criteria in the Import Duties Act, 1958. But as my hon. Friend was told in reply to his Question on 27th October, Government policy since 1963 has been to reduce the horticultural industry's dependence on the tariff.
