Mr. Brynmor John
asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps are being taken in Wales to remedy existing long-term pollution of rivers; what the cost of such action is; and what further initiatives are proposed in respect of this problem.
Mr. Peter Thomas
A survey of the state of the rivers of England and Wales is being undertaken by the Department of the Environment and the Welsh Office, in collaboration with river authorities. A full report will be published late next year and will provide an assessment of the cost of restoring polluted rivers to a satisfactory condition and of maintaining them in that condition.
