asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she is aware of the practice of appointing collective governing bodies for several schools; what is her policy on this matter; and if she will make a statement.

Section 20 of the Education Act, 1944 empowers local education authorities to make arrangements for the constitution of a single governing body for any two or more maintained primary or secondary schools. These arrangements do not require my approval.
