asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether, having regard to the high frequency of disturbance by aircraft noise now suffered by residents under the Heathrow glide-path, he will arrange for aircraft to join the Instrument Landing System beam nearer the airport than at present so as to provide for a greater variety of approach and consequent spread of noise nuisance.

I am aware of the problem, and I am seeking for possible improvements. But aircraft have to approach the glide slope from below, so joining it nearer the airport would involve lower flying and more noise than at present. Moreover, the time needed for safe and orderly landing of modern jet aircraft prevents them from joining the glide slope less than seven miles from touchdown.
