asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many handling accidents occurred in premises subject to the Factories Act, 1961, during 1969; how many of these were investigated by Her Majesty's Factory Inspectorate; and of the total how many were caused by lifting heavy loads.

86,778 accidents, including five fatalities, were reported during 1969 from premises subject to the Factories Act, 1961, which were classified as Handling Goods. The remaining information could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many prosecutions were instituted during 1969 for a contravention of Section 72(1) of the Factories Act 1961; and how many have been instituted during the last 10 years.

No prosecutions were instituted during 1969, nor have any cases been taken under Section 72(1) since 1966, the year in which details of prosecutions under the Factories Act 1961 were first recorded.
