Mr. Pavitt
asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, of the 30 chairs in medical schools in Great Britain for microbiological subjects how many are chairs of clinical bacteriology; and if she will make a statement.
Mr. van Straubenzee
The subjects of the 30 chairs in medical schools are variously named—e.g., "microbiology", "medical microbiology", "bateriology", "virology"—but none is named " clinical bacteriology ". All the university departmental staff concerned are engaged in the study of bacterial disease in patients, cooperating with the doctors in whose care the patients are placed.
