asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will now increase the grant to the Arts Council to enable it to meet the increased cost of producing first-class operas in cities and regions outside London and, in particular, to further the production of the Phoenix Opera Company.

Subject to Parliamentary approval the Arts Council grant for 1971–72 will be £11·9 million. The Council decides on the allocation of its grants and on subsidies to individual companies.
