asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the cost of the balance of payments which will result from an import levy system on food, when this is fully operative.

The proposals for import levies on a number of commodities, which my right hon. Friend announced in his Statement of 27th October, are intended to reduce Government expenditure without involving additional cost to the balance of payments.
