asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated total length of roads in the United Kingdom in 1980 compared with the actual length in 1970.

The total length of roads in the United Kingdom on 1st April, 1971, was 223,415 miles. Local authority roads make up most of this total, and no estimate of the total mileage in 1980 is available centrally.
