asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what are the basic principles of the operation of the British postal code system.

I am asking the Post Office to send my hon. Friend further details, but the broad answer is: to enable postal addresses to be transcribed into machine-readable form to make possible the maximum economic use of automatic sorting.
