asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total revenue received annually by the Exchequer in income tax since 1938; and what percentage each of these figures represented of total Government receipts from taxation from all sources for that year.

The figures for income tax relate only to that tax and exclude other taxes included as "taxes on income" in the national accounts, e.g., surtax, profits tax, corporation tax. Total central Government taxation includes all the taxes shown in the national accounts as taxes on income, taxes on expenditure and taxes on capital but excludes national insurance and similar contributions.
