asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to make mandatory the fitting to new cars of the lead trap filter device recently developed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory which would obviate the reduction of the lead content of petrol with its additional costs to the import bill.

I am urgently considering whether filters of this kind offer an economically sound and practicable alternative to a reduction in the lead content of petrol.
