asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many immigrants work in the catering industry; whether he will provide a breakdown by nationality of those immigrants working in the catering industry; and what proportion of those working in the catering industry is immigrants.
Information from the 1971 Census of Population is not yet available. The latest analysis is contained in the 1961 Census of Population which showed that there were 47,470 Commonwealth and Irish citizens and 19,830 aliens employed in the hotel and catering industry in Great Britain. These figures represented respectively 7·6 and 3·2 per cent. of the total number of persons then employed in the industry.
