asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report a list of research contracts placed in each higher education institution in Wales by the Ministry of Defence for the last five academic years, giving the value and a brief description of the research work in each contract.

Details of research contracts placed by the Ministry of Defence—including the former Ministry of Aviation Supply—are not readily available under academic years. In the past five calendar years, 31 research contracts valued in total at about £300,000 have been placed with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, the University Colleges of Bangor, Cardiff, Aberystwyth and Swansea, and Glamorgan Polytechnic. They were mostly concerned with research into the chemical, physical and electromagnetic properties of various materials and related investigations based on new techniques.
