asked the Secretary of State for Industry what applications have been lodged under the Industry Act to maintain production at the Royal Imperial typewriter plants in Leicester and Hull.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry by what date he expects to receive the report of the independent consultants examining the viability of the Royal Imperial typewriter plants in Leicester and Hull; and by what dates these plants are scheduled to be closed.

Records of assistance to private industry are not kept by planning region and I regret that this information is not available. Assistance over the 10 years 1964–65 to 1973–74, in total and by head of population, was £546 million and £10·2 respectively. The information for each of the years is as follows:

The consultants have been commissioned to report by 21st February, which is also the closure date for the two plants.
