asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he is taking to promote research into methods of biological testing as alternatives to the use of live animals in experiments.

I am advised by the Medical Research Council that it welcomes the development in the course of research of any techniques which avoid or reduce the use of animals in experiments. All members of staff are urged to ensure that details of any such development are published and so made generally available.
