asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the annual cost of lighting on all motorways and major roads.

The costs, in 1973–74, of maintaining lighting on trunk roads, including motorways, in England for which my right hon. Friend is responsible was about £1·6 million.

The cost of electricity averaged over one year would be just over £3 per day for a typical mile of motorway.
