asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will take steps to find out the extent of the contribution to the balance of payments of treatment of overseas visitors in national health hospitals through the national medical service and private practice, respectively, and in total.

We have no way of assessing the contribution made through private practice. This is a private matter between the consultant and the patient.
