asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his consideration of introducing legislation providing for the granting of planning permission for development only on condition that a four-month period is allowed for any archaeological investigation.

:Legislation to secure opportunities for investigation in advance of development in areas of archaeological importance is under consideration, but it would not necessarily take the form suggested.
