asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied that aids to the British film industry cannot be challenged by the European Commission as not being compatible with the Common Market.

Responsibility for examining the compatibility of such assistance with the Common Market rests in the first instance with the Commission. No adverse findings in these matters can be made by the Commission without a specific invitation to the parties concerned to comment beforehand. I have received no such invitation.
