asked the Secretary of State for Wales what guidelines he has issued to public corporations in Wales, such as the Welsh National Water Development Authority, Wales Gas and the electricity boards, relative to their use of the Welsh language in replying to letters from the public; and if he will make a statement.

I understand that the practice of the authority and the boards named is in accord with the Government's policy that letters in Welsh should be answered in Welsh. I have issued no direct guidance to them.
