asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what publicly financed research is being carried out into the relation between atmospheric lead pollution and foetal disorders.

I am advised that an investigation into the correlation between the quantities of substances of possible toxic hazard present in placentae and congenital malformation is currently being made by the University of Aston in Birmingham. The EEC is making a financial contribution towards the cost of this research project from funds to which the United Kingdom subscribes and my Department is also giving financial support.
