asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many applications he has received for financial assistance under Section 8 of the Railways Act 1974 since the Act came into force; how many applications have been succesful; and if he will make a statement regarding the availability of assistance in the present economic situation.

There have been 11 formal applications for grant to date, including two received by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland. All applications are being considered, but no grants have yet been approved. The White Paper on Public Expenditure sets out the current provision for these grants.
