asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will ensure that no disproportionate charge falls on to the local ratepayers concerning the allocation of expenses for the Birmingham bomb trial now being held in Lancaster.

The costs of the proceedings will be met from central funds. In accordance with the standing arrangements for police grant, the costs of policing attract a specific grant of 50 per cent. and are taken into account in fixing the level of rate support grant.
