Food Imports (Subsidies)

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will list (a) the main items of food imported from EEC countries which it is known bear Government subsidies and (b) the percentage amounts of such subsidies.

The Treaty of Rome permits Government aids to be given subject to certain conditions, and, as in the United Kingdom, such aids have been made available by other member States in the agricultural sector. I am not, however, aware of any significant national subsidies on the main items of food imported from other member States.
