asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of job vacancies currently notified to his Department at each of the local employment exchanges in Cheshire; and what are the comparable figures for 1972, 1973, and 1974, respectively.

The following table shows information for July each year. The statistics relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices and are not a measure of total vacanciesrepresent as a percentage of the total insurable population in each respective area; and what were the comparable figures and percentages a year ago.

The following table shows the available information. Statistics of the length of time unemployed do not distinguish separately those unemployed for over two years. Rates of unemployment are calculated by expressing the total numbers unemployed as a percentage of the estimated number of employees, employed and unemployed. Rates can be quoted for complete travel-to-work areas, but not separately for their constituent parts.

Notes:

1. The totals unemployed and the percentage rates of unemployment are adjusted to take account of amendments notified on the four days following the count. All other figures are unadjusted.
2. Rates of unemployment can be calculated only for complete travel-to-work areas. Ellesmere Port and Neston form part of the Liverpool travel-to-work area, for which the rates were 9·6 per cent. at July 1975 and 6·0 per cent. at July 1974. Warrington forms a travel-to-work area with Newton-le-Willows, for which the rates were 4·5 per cent. at July 1975 and 2·1 per cent. at July 1974. Wilmslow is part of the Manchester travel-to-work area, for which the rates were 4·6 per cent. at July 1975 and 2·8 per cent. at July 1974.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many building workers are registered as unemployed in Cheshire and in the area covered by the Macclesfield constituency, at the latest convenient date; and how this compares with the figures for the

under 18, unemployed on the day of the count. Unemployed school leavers register for employment at careers offices whose areas do not necessarily coincide with the corresponding employment office areas. There have been a number of changes in area during the period and for this reason combined figures are shown for some offices.

same month in each of the last three years.

The following table shows the readily available information which relates to males registered at employment offices. The Macclesfield and Congleton Employment Office areas broadly correspond to the Macclesfield constituency.
