Mr. Gow
asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in view of the fact that the proportion of people over the age of 65 years living in the Eastbourne parliamentary constituency is exceeded in one other constituency, namely Worthing, and that out of an establishment of 14 social workers in Eastbourne, there are at present seven and a half only, if she will take steps to bring the number of social workers up to establishment in Eastbourne.
Mr. Meacher
There is a national shortage of qualified social workers. The East Sussex County Council, which is responsible for the appointment of staff in Eastbourne, assures me that it is taking all possible steps to improve recruitment.
