Mr. Anthony Grant
asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the amount of money paid to industry by way of grants or loans since February 1974 contrary to the advice of the Industrial Advisory Board or the regional industrial advisory boards set up by the Industry Act 1972; and what are the names of the firms in question.
Mr. Gregor Mackenzie
It would not be in accordance with normal practice to disclose payments to particular companies since to do so would breach commercial confidence. Grants or loans totalling £10·4 million have been offered under the Industry Act 1972 since February 1974 to the following enterprises contrary to the advice of advisory boards:—
- Meriden Motorcycle Co-operative
- Kirkby Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
- Scottish News Enterprises Ltd.
- Bear Brand Ltd.
