asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what qualifications, experience, etc., he looks for when appointing members to prison boards of visitors.

Members should have the right personal qualities, the interest and the time to make a useful contribution to the work of a board. The aim is to provide every board with members from as wide a range of backgrounds and with as wide a range of qualifications and experience as possible. It is a statutory requirement that at least two members of each board shall be magistrates.
