Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much animal waste is being buried because of the close-down of animal by-products processing plants as a result of court actions relating to offensive odours; how many carcases affected by diseases such as anthrax are treated when processing plants are shut to ensure there is no likelihood of disease being spread; and what representations have been received from the National Farmers' Union and farming organisations about possible pollution hazards from buying infected carcases.
Mr. Denis Howell
I will consult my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and I will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
