asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the working population are (a) members of trade unions affiliated to the TUC, (b) members of other trade unions, and (c) not members of trade unions; and what are the comparable figures for blue collar and white collar occupations, respectively.

The latest available information about the total membership of organisations of workers was published in the November 1974 issue of the Department of Employment Gazette. It is estimated that the total membership of trade unions affiliated to the Trades Union Congress at the end of 1973 represented 39 per cent. of the total working population of the United Kingdom; that membership of other trade unions represented 5½ per cent. and that 55½ per cent. of the working population were not members of trade unions. Comparable figures for blue collar and white collar occupations are not available.
