asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will make a statement about the new committee to be set up under the Medicines Act 1968.

On the advice of the Medicines Commission, the Health and Agriculture Ministers are establishing a Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials under Section 4 of the Medicines Act. This committee will advise the licensing authority on the safety, quality and efficacy of a range of products on which the Committee on Safety of Medicines, which advises on human medicines, has expressed the view that it has not the appropriate expertise to advise. The first meeting of the new committee will be held later this year.I am pleased to be able to announce that Professor R. A. Cawson, MD, FDS, RCS, FDS, RCPS, MRCPath, Professor of Oral Medicine and Pathology at Guy's Hospital, has agreed to serve as the first Chairman of this body.
