Mr. Madden
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the effect of the most recent British Rail fare increase on the number of passengers carried.
Dr. Gilbert
There were 2 per cent. fewer rail passenger journeys in 1975 than in 1974. British Rail is currently attempting to estimate how much this was due to the general economic situation and how much it was due to the September fares increase.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what evidence he has to support his contention that British Rail fare subsidies disproportionately benefit the better off.

The information was derived from the National Travel Survey of 1973 and the Family Expenditure Survey of 1974.
