asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what criteria were adopted by the Equal Opportunities Commission in fixing the salary of the Chief Officer and Secretary at £12,000 per annum.

The duties and responsibilities of the Chief Officer of the Equal Opportunities Commission will be comparable to those of an Under-Secretary in the Civil Service and, therefore warrant payment of the same salary.
