Mr. Roderick
asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what precautions are taken at pony sales for securing the animals' welfare; what regulations exist covering these events; and who is responsible for ensuring that they are observed.
Mr. Strang
The Protection of Animals Act 1911, which provides penalties for cruelty or for causing unnecessary suffering to animals, safeguards the welfare of ponies at sales and, indeed, at all times. The Act is enforced by the police, and my veterinary officers are usually in attendance at pony sales.
